A Festival of Arts: See the beautiful images from CHALEWOTE 2018.

Chale Wote — the annual ACCRA [dot] ALT powered street festival held in Jamestown — Accra, came to a close yesterday, August 26, amidst lavish colour and pageantry.

The 6-day marathon of events, which commenced August 20, consisted art fairs, workshops, a masquerade jam,  film screenings, and musical concerts, and saw exhibitions from over 200 Ghana-based and international artists across 10 locations on the John Evans Attah – Mills High Street.

Held to several thousands, the festival also included cookout sessions, handmade fashion, design and crafts at the Oblatsoobi Market, live historical tours of James Town, extreme sports stunts among others.

This year, the event had as special guest of honour, H.E Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo — president of Ghana—who also becomes the first ever sitting president to attend Chale Wote. Minister of of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Catherine Afeku, was also in attendance — her outfit supported the programme with GHc300,000.

Chale Wote 2018 was held under the theme “Para-Other”, which organisers explain as “a transatlantic shortwave that transcends language and geography. Para-Other requires new knowledge fractals, codes, symbols, and sounds that transmit our core creative intent where imperial languages fail us. This order is an embracing of a black labyrinth and establishment of an aesthetic that captures our cessation of flight and transit into a non-contested existence.”
